Linear Accelerators |
|
| |
Linear accelerators are the standard equipment today for radiation treatment of cancer. Linear accelerators come with different features, a user can choose a low energy, single photon, no electrons unit, similar to the Varian’s low energy accelerators or the user may choose a high energy, dual or triple photon, with electrons and a variety of options such as Portal vision, Multi-Leaf Collimator (MLC), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Depending on many factors, you may choose a basic machine if you cannot charge beyond the standard treatment or you may choose a unit with all of the options available if you are allowed to charge independently for the additional features. In countries like the USA and Europe medical facilities are allowed to charge extra for these optional features. Most of the medical facilities around the world do not charge extra for optional services because the local population cannot afford it. There are two technologies that can greatly help the service provider, a MLC and a computerized 3D treatment Planning Software (TPS). These two technologies can greatly help the service provider to deliver a much more precise treatment and avoid irradiating healthy tissue. |
